Working with paper and gold leaf, using it to create a counterintuitive form, in this case covering the member in delicate Kozo paper ‘scales’, rendering the ‘Armadildo’ passive and feminine. The Armature of the penis is fragile and temporal and I wanted to draw parallels with another creature that despite its appearance of armoured resilience is as vulnerable to human environmental impact as the elephant.
Alice von Maltzahn is a british artist living and working in London. She studied art at Wimbledon College of Fine Art and The Ruskin School of Fine Art and Drawing at Oxford University. She has exhibited in Berlin, Paris, Cologne and London and was artist in residence at Blacks Club Soho between 2015 and 2016.
