When preparing for this project I looked at a lot of Indian interiors and jewellery as I liked the idea of decorating the fertility symbol as a pretty, feminine and ornate object within that aesthetic. Recently I have been painting a lot of male nudes and people often say how they feel uncomfortable looking at naked men/penises and so the idea of making a pretty, flowery penis object exaggerates this and hopefully makes you think about that.
Born in Israel 1982, Vanessa studied oil painting and sculpture for three years at Charles Cecil Studios in Florence. Now she lives and works in London focusing commissions or working towards her next solo show of male nude portraits. Most recent solo show ‘And Is it True?' at Rook and Raven Gallery showed storytelling paintings reflecting on the moral ambiguity and conflict found in children’s literature.
